Searching for the best personalized luggage tags turns up a lot of lists written by people who have never attached one to a checked bag. We make them, so this guide skips the roundup format and answers the question that actually matters: which kind of tag fits the way you travel? We make three core types in our Lehi, Utah shop, laser-engraved aluminum, laser-engraved plastic, and embroidered fabric, and each one is the right answer for a different traveler. Here is how to choose.
What makes a personalized luggage tag "good"?
Before comparing materials, it helps to agree on the job. A good luggage tag does four things: it survives baggage handling, it stays readable for years, it carries enough contact information to get a lost bag home, and it makes your suitcase easy to spot on the carousel. Price and looks matter, but a pretty tag that cracks on its second trip is not a bargain.
Two features do most of the durability work. The first is the attachment. Every tag we make ships with a stainless steel loop or a sewn fabric handle rather than a thin plastic strap, because the strap is usually what fails. The second is the personalization method. Engraved and embroidered text cannot smudge, peel, or wash off the way a printed label or a hand-written card can.
Engraved aluminum luggage tags: the toughest option
If you check bags often, start here. Our metal luggage tags are cut from anodized aluminum .068 inches thick, roughly the thickness of a quarter, so they do not bend or crack in a baggage system. Your details are laser-engraved into the surface, which means the text is as permanent as the tag itself.
There are two sizes. The 2" wide aluminum luggage tag (3.85" x 2") takes up to five lines of text per side and comes in nine anodized colors. The 3" x 1.25" aluminum tag fits four lines per side and is the better fit for carry-ons, backpacks, and gear bags where a full-size tag flaps around. Both include a 6" stainless steel loop with a threaded barrel closure.
Choose aluminum if: you check luggage regularly, you want the engraving to outlast the suitcase, or you want a tag that can also carry a company or club logo.
Keep in mind: the engraving is permanent, so put only stable details on it (name, mobile number, email) and leave trip-specific addresses off. Our guide to what to put on a luggage tag covers the layout line by line.
Engraved plastic luggage tags: waterproof and the widest color range
Our plastic luggage tags are laser-engraved into textured two-ply plastic. The laser removes the top layer to reveal the contrasting layer underneath, so the text is part of the tag rather than printed on it. They are waterproof, which makes them a favorite for beach trips, cruises, and anyone whose bag spends time on a wet tarmac.
The standard plastic tag is about 4" x 2.25", 1/16" thick, and holds up to five lines of text. A carry-on size (3" x 1.75") takes four lines. Engraving is on one side, and the back of the tag matches the text color. Plastic also gives you the biggest choice of colors, including several camouflage patterns, and a stainless steel wire loop is included with every tag.
Choose plastic if: you want a bright, waterproof tag, you want a matched standard-plus-carry-on set, or you want a specific color or pattern.
Keep in mind: plastic is thinner than aluminum. It holds up well in normal travel, and we also make an Extreme version at twice the thickness for people who are hard on their gear.
Embroidered fabric luggage tags: flexible, washable, with a hidden address card
Our fabric luggage tags solve a different problem. Rigid tags can crack; a fabric tag flexes, so it cannot be bent, broken, or crushed. Your name, initials, or monogram (up to nine characters) is embroidered to order, and the tag is washable.
Fabric tags also handle contact information differently. Instead of engraving your details on the outside, the 2.25" wide fabric tag has an interior pocket that holds a contact card (one is included) out of sight. That is the right setup for travelers who do not want their phone number visible to everyone walking past the bag, and it lets you swap the card for each trip. An optional sewn-in pocket fits an Apple AirTag or similar tracker (tracker not included), so the tag can also help you find a bag that has left the airport without you.
For smaller bags there is a 1.5" wide version embroidered with up to three letters, and an Extreme version made from heavy polypropylene webbing with a stainless steel loop for duffels, dive bags, and camping gear.
Choose fabric if: you want the most visible tag on the carousel, you want to keep contact details private, you want an AirTag pocket, or you want a tag that goes through the wash.
Keep in mind: the embroidery is a name or initials, not a full address block. The contact details live on the card inside.

How to pick the right size
Go bigger on checked bags and smaller on anything you carry yourself. A standard-size tag (roughly 4" to 5" long) is easy to spot from across the carousel; a 3" tag suits carry-ons, laptop bags, and gear bags where a larger tag gets in the way. Many travelers end up with one of each, and for plastic we sell that pair as a combo set.
Color is a feature, not decoration
Most suitcases are black, navy, or gray. A tag in neon green, orange, or red on a dark bag is visible from thirty feet away, which is the difference between grabbing your bag on the first pass and waiting for it to come around again. Whichever material you choose, pick a color that contrasts with the suitcase. Our post on clever ways to find your luggage at baggage claim has more on this.
Ordering for a team, school, or company
Everything above applies to group orders too, with one addition: we can engrave a company, club, or team logo on our aluminum and plastic tags and embroider names on fabric tags, so every bag in the group is identifiable and clearly yours. Quantity pricing applies to larger same-logo orders, and there may be an art fee to convert a logo for engraving. Details and a quote request are on our custom luggage tags and bag tags with your logo page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most durable personalized luggage tag?
Engraved aluminum. At .068" thick with laser-engraved text and a stainless steel loop, it is the tag we recommend for anyone who checks bags often.
Are personalized luggage tags worth it?
Yes, if you have ever watched someone walk off with a bag that looks like yours. A personalized tag makes your bag easy to spot and gives the airline a way to reach you if it is misrouted, and an engraved or embroidered tag does not wear out the way paper tags do.
Metal or plastic luggage tag: which is better?
Metal is thicker and more rigid, so it is the stronger choice for checked luggage. Plastic is waterproof, thinner, and comes in more colors. Both are laser-engraved, so the text lasts either way.
What should I put on a personalized luggage tag?
Your name, a mobile number with country code, and an email address. Leave your home address off an engraved tag. If you want an address on the bag, use the card pocket on a fabric tag so it can change with each trip.
Where are YourBagTag luggage tags made?
In our shop in Lehi, Utah. Aluminum and plastic tags are laser-engraved to order and fabric tags are cut, sewn, and embroidered to order.
